All In One Dental Implant Office

From initial consultation to completed crown, we will help you restore your teeth using dental implants – all in one location, all directed by Dental Implant Expert, Dr. Palani. You can be sure that you will get only the highest standard of care, to ensure that your dental implant procedure is gentle, rapid, and finishes with a beautiful, natural tooth that only you know is a dental implant.

Unlike many dentists in the community, Dr. Palani is skilled in both surgical implant placement and the tooth restoration using crown and bridgework. He is one of few dental implant dentists in the area to have attained Fellowship status with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. This is a significant advantage for the patient who requires not only a restoration of the natural function but also a beautiful cosmetic result.

    Why dental implants?

Dental implant surgery replaces missing tooth roots, and form a stable foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel and function like your natural teeth. Dental implants also preserve the remaining bone by providing the stimulation previously provided by the natural tooth roots. The preferred method of tooth replacement has become dental implant treatment.

While high-tech in nature, dental implants are actually more tooth-saving than traditional bridgework, since implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support. With dental implants it is not necessary to grind down the adjacent teeth for a bridge, or secure a partial denture to adjacent teeth with clasps which can cause tooth loosening. Implant-supported replacement teeth spare patients many of the disadvantages of traditional false teeth.

Dental implants are so natural-looking and feeling; you may forget you ever lost a tooth. You know that your confidence about your teeth affects how you feel about yourself, both personally and professionally. Perhaps you hide your smile because of spaces from missing teeth. Maybe your dentures don't feel secure. Perhaps you have difficulty chewing. If you are missing one or more teeth and would like to smile, speak and eat again with comfort and confidence, there is good news! Dental implants are teeth that can look and feel just like your own! Under proper conditions, such as placement by an experienced and skilled surgeon and diligent patient maintenance, implants can last a lifetime. Long-term studies continue to show improving success rates for implants.
  • History of Dental Implants
As early as 600 AD, ancient Mayan civilizations recognized the benefit of tooth replacement and were finding ways to replace missing teeth. Archaeologists discovered the skull of a young Mayan woman who had pieces of shell shaped to resemble a tooth in her mouth. Other skulls revealed that both shells and jade had been used to replace missing teeth. Some of these first implants actually fused to the jawbone.

During an archaeological dig in Honduras in the 1930's, Dr. Wilson Popenoe made similar discoveries in ancient Egyptian Artifacts when he discovered skulls with shells and ivory shaped into teeth. Decades later, the modern world began to catch up.

In 1951 at a quiet town in Sweden at the University of Lund, Professor Peringvar Branemark, an orthopedic surgeon, made the first big strides toward oral implantology (dental implant procedures). Dr, Branemark and his ream of researchers were studying the healing process of bones. His team placed titanium rods into the thighs of rabbits. As serendipity would have it, Dr. Branemark's team discovered that it was impossible to recover any of the bone-anchored titanium rods to see how the bone had healed. The titanium had bonded irreversibly to the living bone tissue.

It did not take them long to see the enormous potential in this technique. Wanting to continue to study this process, Dr. Branemark decided that it would be much easier to observe the healing process in the mouth. During this process, he discovered that titanium screws could be used as bone anchors for teeth. The research came to discover that titanium (a very strong and non-corrosive metal) was the only consistently successful material for dental implants. He named this procedure osseointegration.

After three decades of study, fellow scientist continued to be skeptical so Branemark conducted numerous tests, both on animals and humans, before publishing his research in 1981. The paper was presented at the Toronto Conference in Clinical Dentistry in 1982. As the paper was carefully scrutinized, medical confidence grew in this procedure and guidelines for dental implant logy were set.

This procedure was first introduced to people who had lost all of their teeth and had difficulty stabilizing or tolerating dentures because of loss of jawbone needed for stabilizing. Even then it was well known that tooth root implants worked best in the dense jawbone generally found in the front part of the lower jaw.

The first dental prosthetic implants were a one-size fits all design. They were the same width with only the length being variable. Original surfaces were machine smoothed and polished. Modern day implants come in a variety of shapes and sized to suit different teeth that need to be replaced. The surfaces of dental implants have been improved to enhance the Osseo integration process. Implants are no longer smoothed by machines. They are sandblasted to roughen the surface and acid etching is used to increase the surface area to which bone can attach.

Over the next two decades, technology has continue to grow. Slight modifications in titanium have improved healing time. Procedures have become quicker, easier, and less painful. Today dental implants have a 98% success rate with proper care.
  • Who is a Dental Implant Candidate?
Many people who suffer from missing teeth have a natural concern about whether or not they are good candidates for dental implant treatment. An experienced restorative dentist such as Dr. Palani, DDS, FICOI is the best person to evaluate a patient's condition and advise on the right course of treatment. Dr. Palani and his highly trained staff have proven expertise, experience, and ability to visualize what implants will achieve for each person in terms of functionality and aesthetics. Implants are the most effective and long-lasting treatment for tooth restoration.

The ideal candidate for dental implants is someone who has lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury or other reason. This person is in good general and oral health, has adequate bone in jaw to support the implant, and healthy gum tissue that is free of periodontal disease. Choosing implants over bridges is actually more tooth-saving because implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support. Implants are natural feeling and looking.

Dental implants provide many advantages over dentures and bridges:
    •  Esthetics: Implants look and feel like your own teeth. Because implants integrate into the structure of your bone, they prevent bone loss and gum recession that can accompany traditional bridgework and dentures. No one will know that you have had tooth replacement.
    •  Tooth-Saving: Dental implants don't sacrifice the quality of adjacent teeth. Neighboring teeth do not need to be altered to support the implant as they do in traditional bridgework. Leaving more of your own teeth untouched is a significant long-term benefit for oral health.
    •  Confidence: Speaking and eating with implants is as natural as it is with your own teeth. Implants are secure and free from clicks, slips, and wobbles that can cause denture and bridge wearers to be self-conscious. Implants also mean no more messy glues.
    •  Reliable: The success rate of implants is highly predictable.

There are factors that might prevent you from being an implant candidate. If you have uncontrolled diabetes, are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy, parathyroid disorders, blood disorders, rare bone disorder, bone marrow cancer, or physical factors such as poor bone quality, low sinuses, or nerve bundles. With Dr. Palani's advanced training and expertise in dental implants, he and his staff will help determine the best treatment for you.

Once you have decided on dental implants, there are several factors that contribute to long-term success.
    1.  The quality and quantity of bone available equals greater success.
    2.  The experience and ability of the dental surgeon. There is no substitute for the experience and the individual talent of a dentist.
    3.  The quality of restoration placed on top of the implant. Dr. Palani uses Nobel Biocare, a world leader in innovative and restorative dental solutions.
    4.  Correct and precise placement of the implant. This is crucial for ensuring no real change in the bite and the general comfort of the implant. A digital-x-ray helps to accurately determine this point.

Dr. Palani, DDS, FICOI is a dental expert who specializes in restorative dentistry. Implants are bonded with the gum tissue and underlying bone in the mouth. Because Dr. Palani specializes in precisely these areas, he and his team are able to complete the process from start to finish with no need to go between a general dentist and a periodontist.
  • Dr. Giri Palani, Dental Implant Expert
Despite great improvements in dental care, millions of American still suffer from tooth loss. Dr. Giri Palani, DDS, FICOI's biocompatible dentistry takes into account the effect of dental treatment and materials on the overall health of the individual, honoring the connection between the mouth and body. His environmentally friendly office is a forerunner in cosmetic and implant dentistry. Graduating from Marquette University School of Dentistry and going on to complete the rigorous Hospital of Dentistry Program at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, California, led to Dr. Palani's advanced training and expertise in rehabilitating healthy and beautiful smiles .

Tooth loss can occur for a variety of reasons (tooth decay, gingivitis, or injury). Bridges and dentures use to be the only options available, but today there are dental implants. Dental implants are replaced tooth roots. Implants provide a strong foundation for permanent or removable teeth that are made to match your natural teeth. Dr. Palani offers cutting edge techniques and technology in implant dentistry that will last a life time.

The advantages of dental implants are numerous:
    •  Improved Appearance:Implants look and feel like your own teeth. They are designed to fuse with the bone so that they become permanent.
    •  Improved Speech: Implants allow you to speak without the worry that teeth might slip or cause you to mumble or slur words.
    •  Improved Comfort: Implants become permanent and eliminate the discomfort of removal
    •  Easier Eating: Sliding dentures can make chewing difficult. Using the latest "All On Four" procedure, Dr. Palani can implant upper and lower strategically placed posts to secure already existing dentures. This new procedure gives denture wearers an alternative to denture adhesives. Implants allow you to eat with confidence and without discomfort.
    •  Improved Self-Esteem: Dental implants give you back your smile!
    •  Improved Oral Health: This procedure does not require reducing other teeth as a bridge requires, leaving more of your own teeth in tact. It also allows for easier more natural cleaning in between teeth.
    •  Durability: They are very durable and with proper care will last a lifetime. Dr. Palani specifically works with vendors such as Nobel Biocare (world leader in innovative and restorative dental solutions) to insure that your restored smile lasts a lifetime.
    •  Convenience: There is no need to remove the implants to clean or use special adhesives to make sure they remain in place.

Once a plan is in place, a tooth root implant ( a small post made from titanium) is placed in the bone socket of the missing tooth. As the jawbone heals, it grows around the implanted metal post, securing it to the jaw. Healing takes from six to twelve weeks. Once the tooth root implant has bonded, a small connector post is attached to hold the new tooth and a replacement tooth called a crown is then attached. The crown will match the other teeth in your mouth. The procedure is done under local anesthesia and produces little discomfort. Dr. Palani and his staff will be with you throughout this entire process.

Once the decision to pursue dental implantology has been made, Dr. Palani and his highly trained staff will work with you to customize a treatment program that fits each individual. Committed to the latest advancements in cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Palani's office uses digital x-rays, lasers for the shaping of gum tissues, and the most respected vendors in the business. Commitment to quality and on going advances in the field of restorative dentistry, translate into quicker recovery times, less pain, and confidence that your new smile will be with you forever.

Dr. Palani is a certified Fellow In the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. While serving as Chief Resident at the Advanced Education General Dentistry Program at UCLA, Dr. Palani focused his time on Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry, understanding the importance of being with his patient for the entire procedure. He is also trained in bone grafting and sinus lift procedures. Dr. Palani is one of the few dentists who offer complete treatment from start to finish.
